Three-way catalysis is a catalytic process that converts harmful gases such as CO, HC and NOx emitted from the exhaust of a vehicle into harmless carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen through oxidation and reduction. The carrier part of the catalytic converter is a porous ceramic material, which is installed in the special exhaust pipe. It is called a carrier because it does not take part in the catalytic reaction itself, but is covered with a layer of precious metals such as platinum, rhodium and palladium. It is an important off-board purification device installed in the exhaust system of a car.

The working principle of the three-way catalytic converter is: when the high-temperature exhaust gas passes through the purification device, the purifying agent in the three-way catalytic converter will enhance the activity of the three kinds of gases of CO, HC and NOx, prompting them to carry out a certain oxidation-reduction chemical reaction, in which the CO oxidises into the colourless and non-toxic carbon dioxide gas at high temperature; HC compounds oxidise into water (H20) and carbon dioxide at high temperature; and the NOx is reduced into nitrogen and oxygen. is reduced to nitrogen and oxygen. Three kinds of harmful gases become harmless gases, so that the car exhaust can be purified.

The ternary catalytic reactor is similar to a muffler. Its outside is made of double-layer stainless steel plate in the shape of a cylinder. In the sandwich of the double-layer sheet, there is an insulating material ---- asbestos fibre felt. Inside, there is a purifying agent in the middle of a mesh partition. The purifying agent consists of a carrier and a catalyst. The carrier is generally made of aluminium trioxide, and its shape is spherical, polygonal and mesh partition. The purifying agent actually acts as a catalyst, also known as a catalyst. The metals platinum, rhodium and palladium are used for catalysts. One of these is sprayed onto a carrier, which constitutes the purifier.

The three-way catalyst usually does not need to be cleaned, but if the three-way catalyst oxidises badly it is simply replaced. Because, the three-way catalyst operates at about 350 degrees, it is best to have no liquid water left, so cleaning is not good.
